Understanding Different Terms

End Stage Renal Failure (ESRD)
Patients need some kind of renal replacement therapy, i.e. dialysis or transplantation.  U.S. Medicaid views this as less than 10% function.  

Chronic Renal Failure
Higher renal function, requiring some type of medical management is considered.  

Renal Insufficiency
If there is diminished renal function, but no biochemical changes, other than an elevated BUN and creatinine level.
